If wearing skinny jeans marks you out as a millennial, there is nothing more Gen Z than slipping into some floor-skimming baggy jeans, at least when it comes to denim. The super-sized shape and slouchy silhouette that is all over your TikTok feed is totally Y2K inspired but (like all the other retro trends from than era) it can be a little bit tricky to wear. Basically, we want to know, how on earth do you wear baggy jeans without looking like a sk8r boi?
Here comes the science bit: It’s all about proportion. If you’re thinking about wearing baggy jeans on the weekend, instead of your boyfriend’s oversized hoodie, choose a tighter fit top. A cropped jumper or neat cropped cardigan would be great options while a bomber jacket would be an excellent idea for outerwear. Fashion often likes to mix up genres and shapes to create cleverly styled lewks but on the bottom half, opt for flats. Trainers or chunky ankle boots are best as heels could topple the look out of kilter.
If you’re heading out for drinks or a boujee lunch, you could smarten up the jeans with a sharp blazer that nips in at the waist and wear it over a bodysuit or cropped top. If you are choosing a longer top or knit, tuck it into the waist to give your look some extra definition.
Chunky sole loafers would keep the look slicker than trainers but still add that necessary volume. If you are dead set on wearing your baggy jeans with heels make sure that the jeans reach all the way to the floor and choose a slinky camisole or backless top to add extra glamour. A chain belt would add authentic Naughties vibes too. Keep the waistband high – because low-rise and baggy is definitely sk8r boi style… Your college crush could never.
