There are some fabrics that are known for their chameleon-like qualities and ability to transform in the hands of any given designer. Denim, however, has always been a byword for low-key dressing: from Levi Strauss’s first pair created for workmen in the late 19th century to the punk era’s distressed denim. Polished it is not. But of course, the world of high fashion is never afraid of a challenge, and the spring/summer 2022 catwalks saw an array of designers bring an elevated spin to this casual classic.

No longer constrained to their OG format, denim manifested in everything from Alexander McQueen’s flowing, curve-clinging midi dresses and Loewe’s cape-like jackets to Peter Do’s crisp blazers and Rejina Pyo’s 1970s-inspired co-ords. Denim fabric was pleated, tailored, patchworked and pintucked – its nonchalant roots barely discernible. So forget everything you know about when it is and is not ‘appropriate’ to wear this iconic fabric – it’s time to broaden your denim horizons.

Why not throw a denim trench coat over a white tee and tailored trousers, or elevate your favourite pair of jeans with a denim blazer? You could even push the boat out at your next cocktail party with Bottega’s sultry denim bustier. If you’d rather dip your toe in the trend, then a denim accessory is a great entry point. Miu Miu’s denim mules will look dreamy with white jeans and an oversized shirt this summer, or you can add a Noughties twist to any outfit with a pre-loved Dior saddle bag rendered in dark denim.

If you want to go all-out (and why wouldn’t you?) then a full-on Canadian tuxedo is never a bad idea, just take your cues from Loewe and Rejina Pyo and go for matchy-matchy shades of blue.
