Being a Miss World contestant doesn’t mean that someone has to be only beautiful. She needs to be exceptionally smart with a host of other character traits as well. And once you’ve been chosen to represent your country, the pressure is on to be what is needed – i.e. an exceptional human being!
Part-time model turned Miss World Sri Lanka Nadia Gyi is one such young and charismatic woman who personifies these attributes… and more. Her shy smile and petite stature may seem demure but deep down, Nadia is quite the opposite.
She is blessed with a firecracker personality with passion running through her veins and that makes her an avid lover of all things green, as well as an advocate for peace.
Nadia is currently an Ambassador for GFlock Reforest and she campaigns for the reforestation of trees around Sri Lanka, while also working as a Peace Ambassador for the World Peace and Diplomacy Organisation (WPDO) in Sri Lanka.
A veritable bundle of energy, she loves to indulge in sports given half a chance. And despite being busy with her efforts to save the planet, the beauty queen is reading for a Master of Science degree in Entrepreneurship. With beauty, brains and a heart of gold, Nadia Gyi is the whole nine yards. But take away the sparkling floor length gown and glittering crown, and you have a home bird whose happy place is her own abode.
The brainy beauty queen sits down with Ashwini Vethakan for a tête-à-tête in which she describes life during and after her reign as Miss World Sri Lanka. Nadia also opens up about her passions, goals and all-time favourites.

Q: How would you describe yourself to our readers?
A: I’m very ambitious and hardworking. I always set goals for myself and try to achieve them. And I’m very passionate about my work and love doing what I do, and that keeps me going.
Q: Besides fashion, what other passions do you have?
A: I’ve always loved dance, and did ballet and hip-hop for a short while when I was younger.
Q: What sort of a child and teenager were you?
A: Studious and sports loving. I was an all-rounder in school and participated in as many activities as I could. The sports I took part in were athletics, swimming, football and netball.
Q: And your most memorable moment in life so far has been…?
A: Being the first Sri Lankan to perform a traditional Sri Lankan dance at the Miss World finals in Sanya, China.
Q: What are your eating habits and fitness regime?
A: Though I don’t have a strict eating schedule, I try to eat as healthily as possible – and avoid junk food, carbonated drinks and cheesecake (my weakness). I work out two or three times a week depending on what time I’m done with work. And I love doing cardio and leg workouts.
Q: Would you call yourself a romantic? And if so, what’s the most romantic thing you’ve done or someone has done for you?
A: Hmm… actually, I’m not very romantic!
Q: So what’s your happy place?
A: Honestly, nothing beats home!
Q: If you weren’t a model, what would you have been?
A: Since I’m not a full-time model, I use the rest of my time on projects and jobs such as entrepreneurship, which interests me. I’m the cofounder of a tech startup called For Your Information where we build different tools such as websites and apps. One of our projects was 444 Powered by Dialog, which is a one stop shop for all your booking needs.

Q: What’s the best advice you’ve received about modelling?
A: A model needs to carry three things – namely nude heels, black heels and nude underwear.
Q: And what is the most memorable critique you’ve had when strutting along the catwalk?
A: Posture holds the key. Always have a straight back – as if there’s a pole running through your spine all the way to the top of your head!
Q: Your best advice on taking praise and criticism is...?
A: Always listen and approach things with a positive attitude. There’s so much that a person can learn by hearing out someone else’s opinion.
Q: Can a person be taught to model or is such an innate talent a must-have?
A: I believe a person can be taught to do anything as long as there is a passion for learning new skills and commitment to it.
Q: What’s the most outrageous rumour you’ve heard about yourself?
A: I don’t think I’ve heard anything extraordinary.
Q: How did it feel when you wore a crown for the first time?
A: I still remember the moment when my name was called and it was probably the most ecstatic I’ve ever felt in my life. It was a really exciting time for me, knowing that I had the opportunity to represent Sri Lanka on an international stage. This journey has been the most memorable one for me.
Q: After being crowned Miss World Sri Lanka, did you feel any pressure when you realised that you’d won? Could you explain how you felt?
A: Knowing there were many responsibilities that came with the title did feel like a lot of work and pressure – especially in the first two months when I was prepping for the international pageant. But I never felt better than when I had accomplished so much in such a short time and made my country proud in every way I could.
Q: You’re among the first generation of models for whom social media is part and parcel of work. When people look back at this moment in fashion, what do you hope your impact would have been?
A: Since social media has become extremely influential in the fashion industry in recent years, I use it to connect with people. I think the impact I’d like to have on those who follow me is for them to understand the power of the medium and not misuse it or base their entire lives on it. A lot of people establish themselves solely online and if there comes a day when social media won’t be needed or they’re no longer on it, it will have a major impact on their lives.
Q: If you were asked to do something drastic to your body such as a nip and tuck in order to stay relevant, how would you react?
A: While it’s not for me, others may think differently – it’s a personal choice.
Q: Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell and Heidi Klum… If you had an opportunity to be mentored by one of them, who would you choose and why?
A: Naomi for sure! I admire the charitable causes she’s supported throughout her career and still does. That’s what I find the most inspirational about someone – when they’re able to give back to communities that are less fortunate and be part of something that helps the needy.
"My ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ project focussed on providing economic relief to veterans of Sri Lanka’s armed forces"
Q: What’s your definition of ‘happiness’?
A: Happiness is counting my blessings, and being grateful for them each and every day.
Q: How would your family and friends describe you?
A: I’m told that I am bubbly and overenergetic… so I’d think that would be the best description of me.
Q: If you find yourself stranded alone on an unknown island, what are the five most important things you’d need?
A: A flashlight, tent, raft, knife and blowtorch.
Q: What’s your ideal holiday destination and why?
A: Galle. Nothing beats the beaches and history of this beautiful city.
Q: Describe your ideal date…
A: Rather than an ideal date, I’d focus on making the most of things with the person I love.
Q: If you could become an ambassador for a global cause, what would it be and why?
A: My ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ project focussed on providing economic relief to veterans of Sri Lanka’s armed forces. This project is very close to my heart because I believe that we don’t do enough in return for the dedicated service they have rendered to us.
Q: What do you do on a day off?
A: On my days off, I’d either be lounging by a pool or chilling at home watching movies all day.

"The fun part of being at Miss World is that it’s a great opportunity to meet people from around the world and learn about different cultures"
Q: If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
A: I’ve been asked this question by many girls, and I always say I’m happy and blessed to be the way I am. There’s nothing in the world I would change about myself.
Q: What advice would you offer the new Miss World Sri Lanka?
A: Representing Sri Lanka at an international pageant comes with hard work and dedication. Once you are at the Miss World pageant, you’ll have to be prepared mentally and physically for the entire month that you are there. You need to be focussed every day as there are no days off!
But the fun part of being at Miss World is that it’s a great opportunity to meet people from around the world and learn about different cultures. The knowledge and experience you gain will last a lifetime.
Q: So what’s next for Nadia Gyi?
A: The world! I want to be more aware of myself as a global citizen and spend the next couple of years travelling the globe, visiting different communities and experiencing diverse lifestyles.
