DRESSING UP A GARDEN

If you’re lucky enough to have a lawn, patio or backyard in your home, why not make the most of this precious square footage? Outdoor projects don’t always have to be expensive and complicated since there are lots of simple, creative methods to make your open-air space pleasant, enjoyable and productive. Here are three DIY ideas to inspire you.
VERTICAL GARDEN It’s hard to beat the simple pleasure of garnishing meals with homegrown herbs or filling a vase with flowers from the garden. Vertical gardens are a fantastic addition to any home and can thrive even in small spaces. There are several innovative ways to set up your own little garden.
For example, hang a shoe organiser on the wall and fill the pockets with soil, and add herbs or small plants. The organiser should be made from canvas as the material will allow water to drain out.
You can also repurpose a step ladder as a vertical garden – simply paint it a vibrant colour and arrange small potted plants on each step. Use rope or twine to secure the pots so that they don’t fall off.
GARDEN THEATRE Who said the best seats in the house have to be in the house? Make the most of breezy evenings by setting up a basic theatre in your backyard. All you need are a few comfy seats, a decent set of speakers and a portable projector screen. It’s a worthwhile purchase since it’ll give you hours of fun with family and friends.
If you don’t have a power point outside, an extension cord for your laptop or DVD player will do the trick. Add a crate as your side table, fill a few bowls with popcorn, keep a cooler handy with cold drinks and you’re good to go.
And make sure you bring everything indoors at night so nothing is ruined by the rain.
MOOD LIGHTING Nothing makes a patio look as inviting as glimmering lights. Hang LED string lights to illuminate the atmosphere with magic and wonder or recycle old glass jars into beautiful lanterns.
Soak the jars in hot water and sodium carbonate (washing soda) to remove sticky labels; then use glue or rope to embellish them with beads or fabric – and voila, your rustic candle holders are ready.
Pathways can be lined with rope lights that have been cut to size, and secured with garden staples and end caps.
