For the love of music

While working in the corporate sector as a chartered accountant, Shashi De Silva discovered her true passion in life through the ivory keys of her piano. What was once a hobby opened her eyes to what she was truly passionate about – teaching the craft of playing the piano to others.

With the support and help of her husband Ryan, she set up the Sasensky School of Piano and continued her passion of teaching the craft of playing the piano.

Having qualified with an ATCL in teaching piano from Trinity College London, De Silva has since gained over 12 years of teaching experience.

Located in Mirihana, Nugegoda, the Sasensky School of Piano provides students with a rich and varied musical education. It is also one of the few Trinity College London approved teaching centres in the island, catering to the needs of over 100 students.

Be it individual, online or small groups of students, lessons are offered to students of all ages and levels. Students of the Sasensky School of Piano have the benefit of individual instruction, as well as the opportunity to perform in a variety of ensembles.

Whether an absolute beginner, advanced learner or amateur pianist, enthusiasts of all ages are welcome to join the school’s courses. The institution’s friendly and insightful approach together with individually tailored teaching methods has produced remarkable results, De Silva maintains.

All students of the Sasensky School of Piano have received high scores at the Trinity College London exams, music festivals, competitions and school exams. The school’s teaching style ensures a positive atmosphere for learning, progress and fun.

For exceptionally gifted musicians, the Sasensky School of Piano offers scholarships to help foster their growing talents.

As the school completes its 10th year, it has entered students for both Trinity College London and ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) exams, as well as for recognised Sri Lankan music festivals.

Students of the Sasensky School of Piano have won local and international prizes – they include achievements at the Trinity College London exams for the past six consecutive years.

With a mission to provide a nurturing environment while developing and enhancing the music skills of students, the Sasensky School of Piano believes that an education in music is one of the most enriching experiences a child, youth or an adult can enjoy.

As the school grows, so does its team of instructors – currently, there are three qualified teachers who work full-time within the school.

Like many institutions that have found themselves turning into online-based learning centres due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sasensky School of Piano too conducts classes online while also entering students to participate in digital exams.

With a philosophy that’s founded on the belief that quality music education comes not only from instilling strong musical and technical fundamentals in students but also from fostering a true appreciation for the arts, the school prides itself on taking special care to tailor lessons to students’ individual needs and goals, so they can develop as complete and versatile musicians.
