Offbeat Islands

BY Pallavi Pinakin

When you live only a stone’s throw from some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, you’re unlikely to be inspired by any old island. Luckily, there are still plenty of island adventures left that are off the beaten path. These beaches are guaranteed to put that coastal sparkle back in your eyes.

GOING CAR FREE If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, why not escape to a car free island? From Ilha do Mel in Brazil and Queen Island in Australia to the trio of Gili Islands in Indonesia, these tranquil places take you back in time to a slower simpler age.

No honking, traffic jams or speeding cars… it’s the pedestrians who take precedence here. So soak in the precious peace and quiet as you get around on foot, by bicycle or even on a donkey, which is a common mode of transport on Lamu Island
in Kenya or by golf cart on Fire Island in New York.

GOING PRIVATE An exclusive island that’s all yours, from its pristine beaches to spectacular views. Sounds like something out of a millionaire’s life, right? Luckily you don’t have to be filthy rich to experience this fantasy for a few days. Contrary to popular belief, private island vacations are available across different price points including some extremely affordable options that can be found in India, the Philippines, Central America and Eastern Europe.

The pricing will depend on your personal preferences. If your priority is warm service, unspoiled nature and local style hospitality, you don’t have to break the bank to book your ideal private island. Those travelling in a large group will benefit from even better rates. On the other hand, if you want swanky accommodation, top-notch facilities and world-class food, be prepared to splurge.

GOING REMOTE All islands are certainly not alike. So if you’ve had your fill of coastal breaks in a particular region, why not venture into uncharted territory? Even in this well-connected and highly documented age, there are places in the world that remain faraway and mysterious for most of us – such as the beautiful islands in the Scandinavian belt and Galápagos Islands with their populations of unusual creatures that inspired Darwinism.

Another bucket list destination for many intrepid travellers is Easter Island, which is situated in remote Polynesia and filled with nearly 1,000 moai, as well as countless myths and legends.
