VALENTINE’S WORKOUT

Two’s company

Valentine’s Day is usually for exchanging roses, chocolates, and all things warm and wonderful. And while you pull your hair thinking about gift ideas for that special someone, why not focus on fitness?

We’re not talking about a gym membership or paying for Zumba classes. It’s more along the line of pledging to work out with your partner at home or outside. Working out can become monotonous and more like a chore than a fun activity. So why not keep yourself motivated to ensure that your part-ner and you keep fit by exercising together?

Not only will you be able to combine your fitness goals and share achievements as a couple but you’ll also be able to challenge your partner with some friendly competition!

Dancing works too if you’re more into samba and less of slower rhythms although doing this consistently is a challenge for most of us.

For a lighter but more regular workout, walking together is a fun way to shed some pounds – you get to spend quality time with each other, have a conversation along interesting routes and even catch some romantic sunsets. You can even take up a sport together – how about a game of badminton?

So this Valentine’s Day, promise your partner that you’ll be his or her fitness buddy for life and honour your commitment – because a couple who plays together stays together!

COUPLE’S WORKOUT

  • Simultaneous sit-ups – sit across each other and clamp your legs together. Grip well. Then stretch on your back with arms on the floor and sit up together.
  • Love lunges – these are fun and with your partner, it’s extra bouncy. Stand facing each other and do lunges while swapping legs. High-five your partner every time you bounce up.
  • Leg lock – one partner stands while the other lies on the floor holding his or her ankles. Keep your legs straight, then slowly bring them up and ask your partner to give you a gentle push on the toes to repeat.
  • Double push – this is a squat and pushup all in one where one partner squats, and the other does a pushup with the latter locking his or her feet on the former’s hips. Grip tight.
  • Touch plank. – take a plank position opposite each other, keeping the elbows right under your shoulders. Keep the plank position using your abdominal muscles and reach forward to high-five your partner, swapping hands
